Difference between water and brine
Beneath the surface layer of salt covering the Atacama Salt Flat, there is an extensive deposit of a Saline solution known as brine, which contains approximately one 70% waterHowever, its salt concentration is extremely high, around 300.000 mg / l of dissolved solids (TDS), mainly sodium, magnesium, lithium, potassium, and boron.
This concentration is between seven and eight times higher than the salinity of seawater, which makes the brine not suitable for human consumption or for agricultural use.
