New book reveals the challenges of lithium in Chile

These and other questions are answered in an educational and simple way by the prominent Chilean engineers David Torres and Norman Toro in "The Power of Lithium," a book presented at the Huanchaca Ruins in Antofagasta alongside figures such as Eliseo Salazar, a leading figure in motorsports and electromobility in the country.

"The Power of Lithium" is a book that reveals, for the first time, previously unknown episodes, challenges, achievements, and major innovations in lithium production through SQM, one of the world's leading lithium producers. Furthermore, the research provides essential and rigorous data on the physical and chemical properties, production technologies, applications, and markets of lithium , making it a valuable reference material for research, academia, and industry.
“Our goal is to showcase, through this book, the development of the lithium extraction process and how, thanks to Chilean professionals, we now have one of the world's leading lithium producers,” commented David Torres of Covalent Lithium, an SQM joint venture seeking to develop and operate the lithium project in Australia. Norman Toro, an academic at Arturo Prat University, added, “We aim to make anyone, simply by reading the book, a lithium expert. We explain how the latest generation of batteries work, the technologies used, why lithium is more important than many other elements, and much more.”
This project is the result of a collaborative effort between SQM's Lithium Vice President, led by Carlos Díaz, and Arturo Prat University. In this sense, the strategic alliance reveals the secrets of an industry that is key to global decarbonization.

“Participating in this project has been of great importance to SQM. One of the authors, David Torres, who previously served as Superintendent in the Atacama Salt Flat, managed to capture in this book the 25-year history of our company, exceptionally detailing the development of the industry in Chile ,” added Carlos Díaz, Executive Vice President of the Lithium Division.
The event brought together various actors from the region from the Seremi de Economía, the Rectors of the Arturo Prat University, Alberto Martínez and the University of Antofagasta, Marcos Cikutovic and SQM executives who were able to share and celebrate the announcement of the book that will become a transversal legacy over time.
“All stakeholders must contribute from their respective fields. In our case, from the economic and mining sector, we work hand in hand with the national lithium strategy, collaborating in this cultural, historical, and scientific endeavor ,” added María Teresa Véliz, Regional Secretary of Economy in the Antofagasta Region.
