SQM was ranked 74/100 in the Dow Jones Chile Sustainability Index and MILA, placing it among the top 5% of the most sustainable companies in the chemical industry.
International recognition of SQM in Dow Jones
SQM was ranked in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) Chile with a total score of 74 out of 100, placing it among the top 5% in the chemical industry. This recognition highlights the improvements SQM has achieved in key areas such as corporate governance, environmental management, human capital development, talent attraction and retention, among others.
This progress reaffirms SQM's commitment to global sustainability standards, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dow Jones Assessment: Key Findings by Dimension
In the latest evaluation, SQM showed significant improvements in all three dimensions analyzed:
- Economic dimension: increased from 60 to 76 points
- Environmental dimension: increased from 63 to 74 points
- Social dimension: improved from 57 to 73 points
Each of these categories measures aspects such as business ethics, environmental policy, eco-efficiency, diversity, human rights, and corporate social responsibility.
One of the most notable indicators was operational eco-efficiency, which measures how operations align with global goals to reduce environmental impact and move toward sustainable production.
Sustainability as part of SQM's strategy
Javier Silva, SQM's Manager of Salar Contract Administration and Sustainability, praised the results, noting: "This evaluation recognizes the efforts we have made at all levels of the company to advance sustainability. It motivates us to continue improving, reduce our impact, strengthen dialogue with neighboring communities, and maintain high standards of transparency."
Sustainability goals and upcoming challenges
SQM has defined environmental goals that reinforce its commitment to climate action and operational sustainability:
- Reduce continental water use by 40% by 2030 and by 65% by 2040
- Reduce brine extraction by 50% by 2030 (already reduced by 20% in 2020)
- Achieving carbon neutrality by 2040
- Reduce waste generated by 50% by 2025
Vision for the future: the path to DJSI World
SQM began its participation in sustainability indices in 2020, when it was included for the first time in the DJSI Chile and the DJSI MILA Pacific Alliance, positioning itself among the five most sustainable companies in Chile, according to the IPSA ESG index.
The 14-point improvement in just one year reflects the progress driven by the 2023 Sustainability Plan, which considers actions across the entire organization.
The next challenge is to move toward inclusion in the DJSI World and DJSI Emerging Markets indices, which would place SQM among the most sustainable companies globally.
